Unfeigned; genuine and sincere. Emma Chamberlain: youtuber, content creator, fashion icon, business owner, and the biggest internet personality. After two competently detached sentences, the fandom of the lifestyle vlogger, Chamberlain, would without question have connected the dots. Emma, a global phenomenon, or as The New York Times referred to as “the funniest person on YouTube” is a rising star. In Emma’s a day in my life vlog, the 20-year-old millionaire starts her day off by making coffee, cooking breakfast, running some errands, and lying in bed for most of her time. How I wish my day in a life would’ve looked like. Then what is it about her that makes her so amusing?
Emma has undoubtedly caught the attention of many with 10.9M subscribers on YouTube and 14.2M followers on Instagram (30/09/2021). I am in awe of how she presents her life as it is- no matter how imperfect or silly. As we follow Emma through her day, many feel as though they are hanging out with their bestfriend. This parasocial relationship- a one-sided psychological relationship between viewer and creator has caused an immense sense of bond between her fans and her. MTV News said it best. “It’s escapism rooted in reality.”
In a world where ‘being real’ is almost a foreign concept, Emma’s existence has helped us cope with the longing desire for something real. She serves everything the young crave for: authenticity, relatability, and exceptionally, reality.
